Objectives

The data and knowledge management policy serves to ensure that data and knowledge is managed correctly and consistently throughout IPBES, and is maintained to the highest possible standard. Specific objectives include the following:

  • To ensure that data and knowledge produced during IPBES knowledge synthesis activities follow legal obligations and the FAIR and CARE principles;

  • To ensure that IPBES products are openly available and designed so they are accessible, to the maximum extent possible, allowing all scientists, IPBES members, IPLCs and other stakeholders to use them and consequently derive and share the benefits from them;

  • To give full consideration to the use of advances in data technology, in particular AI (see also the Code of Practice for AI);

Principles

  • FAIR and CARE principles should be followed to the fullest extent possible, in line with the commitment to open science and accessibility, transparency and reproducibility;

  • IPBES products and associated knowledge synthesis relating to IPLCs or their knowledge should follow the IPBES approach to recognising and working with ILK;

  • International, regional and national law should be complied with, which includes access and benefit-sharing, sovereign rights over genetic resources, rights of privacy, intellectual property rights, data governance regulations and confidentiality duties. If necessary, IPBES products should be anonymised before long-term storage and publication;
